About NFL (US Football)
If all goes according to reports, by the time Super LVI will be played in Inglewood, California, February 2022, the Vince Lombardi Trophy will be awarded to a quarterback who is not one, Tom Brady. That is because if those reports are to be believed, Brady will announce his retirement from football by the age of 44. Multiple generations will then have the opportunity to stand up and cheer, for they have witnessed the greatest football player of all times.
When one talks about Brady, his achievements on the field, the numerous records he has set – some of them will stand for a long, long time, if not forever – and especially the seven Super Bowl trophies he has won, comparisons to other quarterbacks must be made. Terry Bradshaw was the coolest cat around, Joe Montana was all elegant, Jim McMahon was crazy and smart at the same time, and the list goes on and on. Brady is simply the greatest of them all. Period. The man has taken a mid-level team in New England Patriots and has made a dynast out of them, winning six Super Bowls in the process. He then moved into perennial losers Tamba Bay Buccaneers and won another Super Bowl. No one but Brady could have written such a script.
It is reckoned that the first professional footballer in the US was Yale All-American Guard William Heffelfinger in 1892. However, we have to span the years until after the First World War with the formation of the American Professional Football Association in 1920. This included ten teams from four different states but only lasted two seasons until the National Football League was created. The world has changed a lot since then, evidenced by the fact that only two of today’s NFL teams were among the founders, namely the Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears) and the Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals). The oldest continuous franchise is the Green Bay Packers – keeping the same name and staying in the same place. Two years later the name changed to the NFL. In 1967 the National Football League (NFL) has merged with the American Football League (AFL), thus creating the NFL we know today, and as a result establishing the single one-game phenomenon known as the Super Bowl, the most-watched single event in the sports world.
32 teams play an eighteen-week long, 17-games and a bye week regular season, from September to early January, after which seven teams from its conference advance to the playoff. The season’s final is the Super Bowl, which hosts the AFC champion against the NFL champions. Super Bowl weekend (for all its activities and media coverage) is a much thought-after event, with the host city estimated to earn an income in the region of 200 million dollars. The league would usually opt for a warm-weather climate region to host the game, with Florida, Los Angeles, and New Orleans as favorites.
The number of great Super Bowl winners, as well as legendary players over the decades, is simply too many to count. The Green Bay Packers holds the top spot with 13 championships, which includes four Super Bowls and nine titles pre-Super Bowls. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots have won six Super Bowls each, followed by the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers with dive each.
As for Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr., let’s take a deep breath. Number 12 has won 277 games, three regular seasons MVP, five Super Bowl MVP, has started in a record 316 games and 47 playoff games, has thrown for 84,520 yards and 624 touchdowns during the regular season, 13,049 yards, and 86 touchdowns during the playoff and 3,039 yards and 21 touchdowns during Super Bowls. And we can go on and on and on. Oh, yes, and he has lost three Super Bowls as well.
